Chickahominy Wildlife Management Area in Charles City County The management area gains its name from the Chickahominy River which forms the area's eastern boundary. To the south, Morris Creek flows through the area and then along its southern boundary. Other smaller tidal creeks and marshy guts cut into the forests to provide additional wetland diversity. The upland, though mainly wooded with mixed hardwood and pine stands, also features cultivated, mowed and "old field" openings. The area's 5,217 acres are contiguous although there are some interior, private properties. Nearly level, elevations range from about 25 to 50 feet.

he Chickahominy River is a Coastal Plain tributary to the James River that heads northwest of Richmond in the Fall Zone. For its first 15 kilometers the Chickahominy flows over igneous and metamorphic bedrock of the Piedmont, but soon becomes a Coastal Plain stream near Mechanicsville. The low-gradient Chickahominy sluggishly flows through broad swampy lowlands for 60 kilometers from Henrico County to eastern New Kent County. 10 kilometers southeast of Province Forge the Chickahominy River becomes an estuary and makes a turn towards to the south.

With broad expanses of open marshes, cypress trees along much of its shoreline, and a diversity of fish species choose from, the Chickahominy River provides the angler with tidal river fishing at its finest. This river has supported a nationally recognized largemouth bass fishery for many decades.
